VTCO – TEDI SOUTH JOINT VENTURE DESIGN DOUBLES THE ROAD FROM HO CHI MINH CITY TO THE WESTERN REGION

Perspective view of the road after expansion

In response to the rapidly increasing demand for transportation connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta provinces, studying the expansion of this vital transport corridor is of particular importance in reducing congestion, improving traffic capacity, and promoting the region’s overall socio-economic development.

Based on a comprehensive assessment of technical solutions, traffic organization capability, investment efficiency, and implementation feasibility, the architectural design proposal for the Kinh Dương Vương – Bình Điền interchange overpass, developed by the consortium of VTCO and Transport Engineering Design Inc. South (TEDI South), was awarded First Prize by the Selection Council.

The proposal stands out with its solution to expand the road cross-section from the existing six lanes to 10–12 lanes, while also improving traffic organization and key intersections. This effectively meets immediate operational demands as well as the area’s long-term development orientation. The scheme’s high evaluation by the professional council serves as recognition of the consortium VTCO – TEDI South’s capabilities, technical expertise, and practical contributions—particularly those of VTCO—in the field of transport infrastructure.

The expanded section of National Highway 1 is now named Lê Khả Phiêu Boulevard, serving as a main gateway connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta provinces

The roundabout beneath the interchange is designed with artistic elements to enhance visual appeal and strengthen its identity. A key highlight of this area is a luminous column inspired by the crown of Kinh Dương Vương, the legendary progenitor

The design proposal for Bình Điền Bridge spans the Chợ Đệm River (formerly Bình Chánh District). Originally constructed during the French colonial period, the bridge has undergone several upgrades and renovations over time

The project will include the construction of an additional bridge to expand traffic lanes, along with provisions for accessible pathways for people with disabilities. It will also incorporate landscape enhancements and architectural lighting to create a visual highlight for the area at night

The design of the Bình Thuận interchange. This area connects Nguyễn Văn Linh Boulevard and the Ho Chi Minh City – Trung Lương Expressway, and will also be served in the future by Metro Line 3 passing through the city

According to the plan, the National Highway 1 upgrade project will be implemented from now until 2028. Once completed, it will not only help reduce congestion and traffic accidents but also enhance the effectiveness of major corridors such as the Bến Lức – Long Thành Expressway, the Ho Chi Minh City – Trung Lương – Mỹ Thuận Expressway, and Ring Roads 3 and 4.

Alongside this project, the city is also accelerating three other infrastructure upgrades—National Highways 22 and 13, and the North–South arterial route—under the BOT (Build–Operate–Transfer) model.

At the Bình Thuận interchange, a pedestrian bridge will be provided to ensure convenient and safe crossing for local residents
